Glanymor School Dances its Way to Eco-Friendly Success with Zumbathon Fundraiser

Glanymor School in Burry Port, Wales has been crowned the greenest secondary school in Carmarthenshire after winning the council's first ever Eco Challenge Award scheme and a £5,000 cash prize. The school's eco committee, along with the school council, worked tirelessly to come up with innovative projects that would reduce waste, improve energy efficiency, and promote environmental best practice.

One of their most successful initiatives was a Zumbathon fundraiser, where students and staff danced the night away to raise money for eco-friendly equipment and resources. The event was a huge hit, raising over £1,000 for the school's green fund.

'I like to move it, move it,' sang the students as they Zumba-ed their way to a greener future. Their enthusiasm and dedication have paid off, with the school now being recognized as a leader in eco-friendly initiatives.

The judges were particularly impressed with Glanymor's efforts to control litter on the school grounds, improve energy efficiency, reduce traffic congestion outside the school, and reduce and recycle waste. The school has implemented various recycling programs, including composting food waste and encouraging students to bring reusable water bottles.

As part of their prize package, the school received a certificate of achievement and four litter recycling bins, which will be used to encourage pupils to recycle in both the school yard and inside the classroom.

Glanymor's headteacher, Steve Jones, expressed his pride in the school community for their hard work and dedication. 'We are thrilled to receive this award, which recognizes the efforts of our pupils and staff to become a greener school,' he said.

The school will now use its prize money to fund further eco-friendly initiatives, including installing solar panels and improving insulation in the school building.
